The subject matter is starting to become irrelevant; it’s now about cool ways to display images that have been blended into one big image. In this case, adobe has a little applet called zoomify that does the trick nicely. Not as nice as the silverlight code, used here by Doug Lawty. So nice. He is probably using higher res images than I, but the “deep zoom” functionality seems to be far superior on the silverlight version. It also caches more images – whereas zoomify only focuses on the window – out of sight, out of cache. Both can pan and zoom with the mouse wheel. The advantage of zoomify is strictly the point and shoot ease of finding it built seamlessly into photoshop. Yes, it’s a lazy guy’s dream.
